Compared to its close relative, Deutzia crenata, the Slender Deutzia is smaller with finer, more supple branches, giving it a graceful, princess-like appearance. It produces a profuse and beautiful display of pure white flowers.

Slender Deutzia

The Slender Deutzia is a deciduous shrub in the Hydrangeaceae family. Native to Japan, it is found from central Honshu (west of the Kanto region) to Shikoku and Kyushu. It thrives in sunny yet moist environments, such as cliffs, rocky outcrops, and forest edges. Its delicate form and elegant blooms have earned it a reputation as the “princess” of the Deutzia genus.
In Japanese, its name (Hime-utsugi) translates to “a Deutzia as small and beautiful as a princess.” In contrast, the name for Deutzia crenata (Utsugi) means “hollow-branched tree.” The genus name Deutzia honors Johann van der Deutz, a Dutch nobleman and patron of the Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg. The species epithet gracilis means “slender” or “delicate.”
The plant features a shallow, dense system of fine roots. Its branches spread from the base; as they mature, the center becomes hollow. The leaves are opposite, lance-shaped (lanceolate), and have finely serrated edges. The flowers bloom in clusters at the tips of the branches, each featuring five petals and ten winged stamens. After flowering, it develops hemispherical seed capsules that split open when ripe to disperse tiny seeds.
Like the Slender Deutzia, its relative Deutzia crenata also has hollow branches. Its white flowers have five petals and filaments with broad, wing-like shoulders topped with yellow anthers. However, Deutzia crenata grows much taller and has leaves covered in stellate (star-shaped) hairs, giving them a rough texture. The flowers bloom about a month later, facing downwards, and the shoulders of the winged filaments are not pointed.
