コデマリの名前
コデマリの名前の由来は小さな手毬のように花が咲くから。山伏の法衣に由来する「鈴懸」、中国名に由来する「団子花」という別名もあります。ラテン語の属名スピラエは「螺旋」、種小名カントニエンシスは「広東地方の」という意味。花が似ている「大手毬」はガマズミ科です。
コデマリの姿形
コデマリの枝は褐色で細く、地際から叢状に立ち上がり、先端が垂れ下がります。葉は互生し、菱状の楕円形。上半分の縁に鋸歯が入り、先端が尖ります。花は小さく、花弁が５枚、雄しべが多数。その小花が半球状に集まって咲きます。花後は袋果を結び、熟すと裂けて種子を散布。

コデマリの近縁「雪柳」は小さな花々が弓なりの枝先に薄っすらと積もった雪のよう。葉が柳のように細く、花弁５枚の一重咲きが尻尾のように集まります。同じく近縁の「蜆花」は真ん中の窪んだ八重咲きの花が貝のよう。葉が幅広の楕円形で、花弁８枚の花がまとまって咲きます。
