マンデビラはキョウチクトウ科の常緑低木です。原産地は中南米で約120種が分布。暑さに強く、初夏から晩秋まで長期間、花をたくさん咲かせます。木は蔓性、葉は対生で先の尖った楕円形、花は漏斗状のスクリュー形で花弁が５枚、雄しべが５本。雌しべは雄しべに隠れて見えません。
マンデビラの名前
マンデビラの名前の由来は19世紀の英国の外交官ジョン・マンデヴィルが欧州に伝えたため。和名の「智利素馨」は原種が南米のチリに由来し、花がジャスミンに似ていると考えられたからです。別名の「デプラデニア」は以前の分類による属名。現在も園芸名として使われています。
マンデビラの小型種
マンデビラの「サンデリ」はブラジルのリオデジャネイロ州に分布する小型種。蔓の伸び方が緩慢で、ほどよく切り戻せば鉢植えで小さく仕立てられます。白花種の「ボリビエンシス」はコスタリカの南部からブラジル、ボリビアまで分布。園芸名で「サマードレス」とも呼ばれます。
