ノアサガオの花は、漏斗状で浅く5裂し、朝方の咲き始めが青紫色。昼頃には赤みを帯び始め、夕方の咲き終わりには赤紫色へと変わります。

ノアサガオの生態

ノアサガオはヒルガオ科サツマイモ属の多年草。原産地は中南米で世界の熱帯~亜熱帯地域に広く分布しています。日本では紀伊半島から南西諸島まで海岸や林縁、道端などで自生。1日花ですが、大きな花を次々と咲かせます。花言葉は「愛情の絆」「明日も爽やかに」「儚い恋」。

ノアサガオの和名

ノアサガオの和名の由来は、花が「朝顔」に似ていて野原で自生しているからです。しかし、普通の朝顔は種子で殖える1年草。花が朝方に咲いても昼過ぎには萎み、9月頃には咲き終わります。一方、野朝顔は匍匐茎で殖える多年草。花が夕方まで萎れず、11月頃まで咲き続けます。

ノアサガオの名称

ノアサガオは各地で自生していることもあって多くの名称があります。たとえば、日本では「琉球朝顔」「西表朝顔」「南洋朝顔」、ハワイ諸島では「朝顔の木」、英語圏では「青い朝顔」「青い夜明けの花」など。さらに「オーシャン・ブルー」など、多くの園芸品種名もあります。
