トチカガミは水中で茎が匍匐し、節々から根、葉柄、花柄を伸ばします。葉は円形で水面を浮遊。表面に光沢があり、裏面で気嚢が膨らみます。花は雌雄異株で花弁が３枚。雄花は花糸が６本、雌花は花柱が６本です。花後は６稜の蒴果を形成。秋に茎先で殖芽を作り、冬を越します。
