クチナシ
クチナシはアカネ科クチナシ属の常緑低木。花は一重咲きと八重咲きがあり、実をつけるのは一重咲きのほうです。
よい匂いのする花といえば、春はジンチョウゲ、夏はクチナシ、秋はキンモクセイ。クチナシはこれら三大芳香花の一つです。
クチナシの語源は実が熟しても裂開しないから。クチがない実だから「口無し」です。将棋盤の足がクチナシの実を象っているのは「待ったなし」だから？
クチナシの実にはカロチノイドの一種クロシンが含まれ、着色料に用いられます。クチナシの黄色は、日本では古墳時代から使われ、お正月の栗金団のほか、黄飯という郷土料理もあるそうです。
ところで、クチナシの雄しべを足に、雌しべを頭に見立てると、白い花びらの座布団の上に、黄色いタコさんが現れます。
