オオハルシャギクの原産地
オオハルシャギクはキク科コスモス属の一年草。一般的に「コスモス」と呼ばれる花で、原産地はメキシコの高原地帯です。18世紀にスペインのマドリード王立植物園に送られ、園長のカヴァニレス神父がコスモスと命名。ラテン語で「秩序だって整った美しいもの」という意味です。
オオハルシャギクの渡来
オオハルシャギクの日本への渡来は19世紀。美術学校の教師ラグザーによって、イタリアから持ち込まれました。各地で広く栽培されるようになり、さらに逸出して野生化も。一方、耕作放棄地などに景観形成作物としても植えられ、お花畑で人々を呼び込む観光資源になっています。

オオハルシャギクは別名「秋桜」の通り、本来は花が秋に咲く短日植物。今は早生品種が夏の６月から咲いています。また花容も本来、舌状花が８枚の一重咲き。それが今は先の丸い花弁や八重咲きもあります。さらに花色は本来、桃色だけ。それが白色、赤色、黄色へと増えました。

オオハルシャギクの黄色
玉川大学では1957年、花弁の先が黄色のオオハルシャギクが発見されました。突然変異によるものでしたが、交配が続けられて1988年、黄色品種「イエローガーデン」が育成。さらに改良が重ねられた結果、1998年に黄色がより映える品種「イエローキャンパス」が作られました。
