キバナコスモス
キバナコスモスの原産地
キバナコスモスはキク科の一年草。オオハルシャギクと同じコスモス属で原産地も同じメキシコです。しかし、オオハルシャギクより寒さに弱く、標高の低いところに自生。欧州には18世紀、スペインのマドリード王立植物園に送られ、日本には19世紀、イタリアから渡来しました。
キバナコスモスに似た花
キバナコスモスの花は大きさが３～５cm。一重咲きと八重咲きがあります。学名のスルフレウスはラテン語で黄色という意味。このキバナコスモスによく似ている花が、ハルシャギク属の「オオキンケイギク」です。同じく鮮やかな黄色の花を咲かせますが、駆除対象の特定外来生物。
キバナコスモスの近縁種
キバナコスモスは、オオハルシャギクと同属でも別種のため交雑不可能。ただし、繁殖力が旺盛なので、こぼれ種で一緒に栽培していると、やがてオオハルシャギクを凌駕してしまいます。一方、チョコレートコスモスは交雑可能。交雑種は「ストロベリーチョコレート」と呼ばれます。
