Siberian Larkspur

Siberian Larkspur is a perennial plant in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Native to Northeast Asia, it grows in clusters in sunny, dry fields and mountainous regions. It was introduced to Japan during the early Meiji period for ornamental use. While the flowers contain delphinidin, a pigment that produces their vivid blue hue, the entire plant contains delphinine, a highly toxic alkaloid.
The Japanese name for Siberian Larkspur (Hien-so) literally means “plant with large flowers that look like flying swallows.” Meanwhile, Zhao Feiyan (Yizhu)—the Empress of Emperor Cheng of the Western Han dynasty, renowned for her slender beauty—was nicknamed “Flying Swallow” because her dancing was as light and graceful as a swallow in flight. Despite sharing the same characters/meaning, she has no connection to this plant.
The genus name Delphinium means “dolphin-like,” referring to the shape of its buds and flowers. The specific epithet grandiflorum means “large-flowered.” Its English common name, Siberian Larkspur, comes from its native region and the spur extending from the back of the flower.
Siberian Larkspur develops a thick taproot with slender lateral roots. Its hollow, branching stems bear deeply palmately lobed, alternate leaves. The flowers feature five petal-like sepals, with a spur extending from the top sepal that holds nectar. At the center are four petals covered in yellow hairs, numerous stamens, and three pistils. It produces pod-like follicles that split open when mature to scatter seeds.
