オンシジウムの概要
オンシジウムはラン科の着生植物です。原産地は中南米のメキシコ～ブラジル周辺。熱帯～亜熱帯の森林の樹上や岩上で育ちます。日本へは明治時代に他の西洋蘭とともに渡来。花が揺れると、踊り子のように見えるので、「ダンシング・レディ・オーキッド」という別名があります。
オンシジウムの名前
オンシジウムの名前は学名の属名です。属名はラテン語のオンコスに由来し、「こぶ」という意味。これは唇弁の基部に小さな隆起があるからです。和名の「群雀蘭」は花々が小枝に並ぶ雀の群れに見える系統。「姫雀蘭」は花が小さく、「虎斑雀蘭」は花冠に褐色の模様が入ります。

オンシジウムの根は空中で養水分を取り込む海綿状の組織が発達。茎は卵形の偽鱗茎が養水分を貯め込みます。葉はしなやかな楕円状で垂れ気味。花は枝分かれした茎にたくさん咲きます。唇弁が１枚、花弁が２枚、萼片が３枚。蒴果は細長く、熟すと裂けて微細な種子を散らします。
オンシジウムの種類
オンシジウムで最も普及しているのはフレックスオスム種の交配種「アロハ・イワナガ」。蝶々のような黄色の花が咲きます。一方、「シャリー・ベイビー」はソトアナム種やレウコキラム種などの交配種。白色の花冠に褐色の模様が入り、チョコレートのような甘い匂いを放ちます。

It was introduced to Japan during the Meiji period along with other Western orchids. Its flowers resemble dancers when they sway, earning it the nickname “Dancing Lady Orchid.”
Oncidium is the genus name of its scientific name. The genus name comes from the Latin word onkos, meaning “bump.” This comes from the small protuberance at the base of the labellum. Depending on the variety, the Japanese names for this species include “Sparrow Orchid,” “Small Sparrow Orchid,” and “Tiger-Striped Sparrow Orchid.”
Oncidium roots have a spongy structure that absorbs nutrients and water from the air. The stems have ovate pseudobulbs that store nutrients and water. The leaves are flexible, elliptical, and slightly droopy. Flowers bloom in abundance on branched stems. Each flower has one lip, two petals, and three sepals. The capsule is elongated and splits open when ripe, scattering tiny seeds.
The most common Oncidium is “Aloha Iwanaga,” a hybrid of Oncidium flexuosum. It produces butterfly-like yellow flowers. Meanwhile, “Sharry Baby” is a hybrid of Oncidium sotoanum and Oncidium leucochilum. Its white corollas have brown patterns and a sweet, chocolate-like scent.
