キリカズラの和名の由来は花が桐に似ている蔓草だから。ラテン語の属名ロフォスペルムムは「鶏冠のような種子」という意味で種子の翼を表します。種小名エルベセンスは「赤色」という意味で花色を形容。園芸では昔の属名でマウランディアやアサリナと呼ばれることもあります。
