Mexican Twist is a vine of the Plantaginaceae family. It is a perennial plant in the tropics and an annual plant in the temperate zone. It is native to the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains in Mexico, North America. It spreads to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, growing wild in forest edges and valleys, but is also cultivated for ornamental purposes. The flower tube is deep, the nectar is rich in sucrose, and hummingbirds are responsible for pollination.
The Japanese name for Mexican Twist means “Vines of Paulownia” because the flowers resemble Paulownia. The Latin genus name Lophospermum means “seed like a cockscomb” and refers to the wings of the seed. The specific name erubescens means “red” and describes the flower color. In horticulture, it is sometimes called Maurandya or Asarina by its old genus name.
Mexican Twist was once classified as a member of the Maurandya genus, native to North America. Therefore, its hybrid with the Red Dragon species, Magic Dragon, is considered to be in the Maurandya genus. It was also once classified as a member of the Asarina genus, native to Europe. Therefore, Lofos from Suntoryflowers is considered to be in the Asarina genus.
Mexican Twist’s vines are thin and weak, and they climb by entangling their petioles and flower stalks with other objects. The leaves are heart-shaped, with sawtoothed edges, and alternate. Both the vines and leaves are covered with short hairs. The flowers are tubular and lip-shaped, with two upper and three lower lip lobes, five stamens, and two pistils. When the capsules ripen after the flowers, they split open and scatter brown seeds with wings.
