ゼフィランサスのサフランモドキ
ゼフィランサスの一種、サフランモドキはヒガンバナ科タマスダレ属の多年草。原産地は中南米で、日本には江戸時代の末、パイナップルの栽培土に混じって渡来したそうです。当初は花が似ていることから、サフランと呼ばれていました。しかし、明治時代に誤認がわかり、サフランの後ろにモドキがつきました。モドキとはいえ、薄紅色の花はサフランに引けを取らない美しさ。
ゼフィランサスのタマスダレ
一方、サフランモドキと同じゼフィランサスで、白い花をつけるものがあります。その花の名前はタマスダレ（玉簾）。サフランモドキとは対照的に、ずいぶん感じのよい名前がついています。名前の由来は、白い小さな花を「玉」に、葉が集まっている様子を「簾」にたとえたから。タマスダレの原産地もサフランモドキと同じく中南米で、日本には明治時代初期に渡来しました。
