ムラサキツメクサはマメ科シャジクソウ属の多年性牧草です。原産地は欧州、西アジア、北西アフリカ。空気中の窒素を取り込んで土壌を肥沃にする緑肥でもあり、世界中に広がっています。
ムラサキツメクサの繁殖力
ムラサキツメクサは明治時代の始め、シロツメクサとともに牧草として日本に移入されました。繁殖力旺盛で、米国や豪州など多くの温帯域では逸出して野生化するほど。花言葉は勤勉です。
ムラサキツメクサの葉と花
ムラサキツメクサは三つ葉。葉片には中ほどに三日月型の白い模様が入ります。花は鞠状のピンク色。ただし、ごく稀に白花を咲かせる株があり、その固定種が雪華詰草、白花赤詰草です。
