Lizard’s Tail

Overview of Lizard’s Tail

Lizard’s Tail is a perennial plant of the family Saururaceae. In Japan, it is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, and overseas from the Korean Peninsula to China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. It contains essential oil components and has a fish mint like odor. It is also used as a herbal medicine as a diuretic, detoxification and antipyretic.

Name of Lizard’s Tail

The Japanese name of Lizard’s Tail means a particular day in the old calendar. This is because the flowers will bloom on that day. The date is half a year after New Year’s Day in the lunar calendar, or the 11th day after the summer solstice.

Another name for Lizard’s Tail

Lizard’s Tail has a Japanese name meaning “half makeup” because the base of the leaf near the flower turns white as if white powder was applied. The tips and undersides of the leaves remain green, so it is also known as “one-sided white grass”, and because only two or three leaves at the tip of the stem are mixed with white, it is also known as “three white grass”. This white part is to attract pollinating insects, and it turns green after flowering.

Appearance of Lizard’s Tail

Lizard’s Tail has thick white rhizomes and elongated heart-shaped leaves. The flowers are small, white, and bloom in clusters like spikes, and the tips that are drooping at first grow up over time. Like the English name Lizard’s Tail, the Latin genus name Solarus also means “tail of a lizard”. It comes from the shape of this flower spike.
