Plumeria
Plumeria is a deciduous tree in the Apocynaceae family. It is native to Central America and was introduced to Japan during the Meiji period. In Hawaii, it is used as a hair ornament, and wearing the flower on the right side means unmarried, and wearing it on the left means married. There is also a legend that if you knit a lei from flowers picked at the dawn of a full moon and give it to the person you love, love will come true.
The name Plumeria comes from the 17th century French botanist Charles Plumier. Another name, Frangipani, is the name of a 16th-century Italian marquis who created a perfume made from this flower. The Japanese name means “Jasmine of India”. This is because when it came to Japan, it was thought that it originated from India. Also, the Japanese name of Jasmine means “white and fragrant flower”.
The leaves of Plumeria are ring-shaped, alternate, oblong, thick, and glossy. The buds gather at the tips of the branches, and the flowers develop with five thick tepals overlapping the edges like a pinwheel. The stamens and pistils are very short and hidden deep inside the flower tube, making them inconspicuous. After flowering, the fruit forms a bag, which dehisces when ripe. The winged seeds are carried by the wind.
Plumeria is mainly grown in tropical regions. The “obtusa” species has a low tree and flowers that are entirely white with a yellow center, and have a refreshing citrus-like scent. In Singapore, it is planted on graves. On the other hand, the “rubra” species has tall trees, red flowers, and a sweet honey-like scent. In Cambodia, they are placed in a coffin.
