ヒオウギの名前
ヒオウギはアヤメ科アヤメ属の多年草。葉は扇状で、宮廷人が持つ檜扇に似ていることから命名されました。花は午前中に咲き夕方にしぼむ一日花。昔から厄除けの植物とされてきました。
ヒオウギの種子
ヒオウギの種子は黒く艶があります。この黒い種子は「射干玉（ぬばたま）」と呼ばれ、和歌では黒や夜にかかる枕詞。「烏玉」「烏羽玉」「野干玉」「夜干玉」などとも書かれます。
ヒオウギと関西
関西を中心に名古屋から広島にかけて7月初旬、ヒオウギは生け花の代表的な花材になります。特に京都の祇園祭や大阪の天神祭では、各家の床の間や玄関、軒先にヒオウギを飾る習慣があります。
