コアジサイの枝は盛んに分岐して横に広がり、褐色の樹皮が縦に裂けて薄く剥がれます。葉は先端の尖った卵形で対生。縁に大きな鋸歯が入ります。小花は花被片が５枚、雄しべが10本、雌しべが２～４裂。花後は卵球形の蒴果を結び、熟すと裂けて淡褐色の小さな種子を散らします。
コアジサイの種類
コアジサイの品種「白花小紫陽花」は花弁も花糸も白色。一方、「緑小紫陽花」は花弁が葉のように緑色です。園芸種の「奥多摩小紫陽花」は「秩父紫陽花」とも呼ばれ、同じアジサイ属の「額空木」との交配種。小紫陽花よりも栽培が容易で、花着きがよく、花に桃色が混じります。
