アマリリス
アマリリスの来歴
アマリリスはヒガンバナ科の多年草でヒッペアストルム属の総称です。原産地は中南米の西インド諸島。日本には江戸時代の末期に渡来し、中型の剣弁咲きが定着しました。戦後に大型の品種が普及し、鉢植えや花壇、切り花に。花言葉は「誇り」「内気」「すばらしく美しい」です。
アマリリスの名前
アマリリスはギリシャ神話に登場する羊飼いの少女の名前です。同じ羊飼いの少年に思い寄せる少女は、神様にお願いし、授かった矢で自傷。滴らせた血から美しい花が咲き、少年は心を奪われるのでした。なお、属名のヒッペアストラムはラテン語で「大きな星形の花」という意味。
アマリリスの園芸名
アマリリスという園芸名の由来は昔アマリリス属に分類されていたから。アマリリス属には原産地が南アフリカの「ベラドンナ」という園芸種があります。一方、ヒッペアストルム属にも「ベラドンナ」という園芸種があって混乱しそう。ベラドンナは「美しい女性」という意味です。
アマリリスの葉と茎
アマリリスは他のヒガンバナ科と違い、葉が花と一緒に開きます。地際から生える大きな葉は、厚みと光沢のある披針形。葉の間から中が空洞の茎が立ち上がり、茎先に大きな花を咲かせます。花後は茎が枯れて葉だけに。なお、茎葉は毒性のあるリコリンを含むので注意が必要です。
アマリリスの花と球根
アマリリスの花は基本的に萼片３枚、花弁３枚、雄しべ６本、雌しべの柱頭が３裂です。ただし、品種によって花被片が尖っていたり、丸みを帯びたり、一重咲きだったり、八重咲きだったり。春咲き、初夏咲き、真夏咲き、秋咲きがあるものの、冬は葉が枯れて球根だけになります。

It came to Japan at the end of the Edo period, and medium-sized sword-shaped blooming became established. After the war, large varieties became widespread, and were used for potted plants, flower beds, and cut flowers. The flower language is “pride,” “shyness,” and “wonderfully beautiful.”

The flowers of Amaryllis are basically 3 halves, 3 petals, 6 male stamens, and 3 stigmas of female stamens. However, depending on the variety, the flower pieces may be sharp, rounded, single-flowered, or double-flowered. There are spring blooms, early summer blooms, midsummer blooms, and autumn blooms, but in winter the leaves die and only the bulbs are left.
