コダチダリアはキク科ダリア属の多年草。原産地は北米のメキシコ、中米のグアテマラ、エルサルバドル、コスタリカ、南米のコロンビア、ボリビアで、高地の岩場、草地、林内などに自生します。日本へは明治時代に渡来。丈が高く、花が大きく、花言葉は「華麗な振る舞い」です。

コダチダリアの和名の由来は、草丈が人の背丈の何倍も高くなり、茎が木質化して直立するダリアだから。英名も「木のダリア」という意味です。ダリアはラテン語の属名で、スウェーデンの植物学者アンデシュ・ダール博士への献名。種名インペリアリスは「皇帝」という意味です。

コダチダリアは漢字の一般的な読み方から「キダチダリア」、学名から「コウテイダリア」とも呼ばれます。種名も「アルボレア」「レーマニー」「マキシミリアーナ」「エクセルサ」と多数。ただし、エクセルサは草丈が低く、開花が早く、花色が濃いので別種とする説もあります。

コダチダリアは地中に大きな塊根を作り、冬に茎葉を枯らして休眠します。茎は４稜形で竹のような節があり、中に水分を貯留。葉は幾重にも分枝した小葉の集まりで、茎を抱えて対生します。花は大輪で、真ん中に筒状花が密集し、その周りに舌状花が８枚。花後は痩果を結びます。
コダチダリアの利用
コダチダリアは15世紀にメキシコ中部で栄えたアステカの人々が狩猟時に茎を水筒として利用。ナワトル語で送水管を意味する「アココショチトル」と呼ばれていました。古くから栽培されて食料や薬、飼料にも利用。塊茎は機能成分のイヌリン、葉はクマリン類などを多く含みます。
