キルタンサスはヒガンバナ科の多年草。原産地は南アフリカで、日本へは明治時代の末期にマッケニー種が移入されました。地味に出回る冬の切り花でしたが、近年は鉢植えや地植え用に球根の流通が拡大。うつむくように花が咲くので、「恥ずかしがり屋」という花言葉があります。
キルタンサスの名前
キルタンサスは「曲がった花」という意味で、花の咲き方に由来します。種小名のマッケニーは1849年、南アフリカに開設されたダーバン植物園の初代学芸員マーク・ジョンストン・マッケンに由来。英名は「イファファの百合」という意味で、南アフリカ東部の地域名に由来します。

キルタンサスの和名「笛吹水仙」の由来は葉が水仙に似ていて、花が笛に似ているから。球根から細長い葉を伸ばし、その間から花茎を伸ばし、花茎の先端で細長い筒状の花々を下向きに咲かせます。花は果物のような甘い香りで夜蛾を誘き寄せて受粉。花後は卵形の蒴果を結びます。

キルタンサス・マッケニーの品種は「ヒマラヤン・ピンク」「あかつき」「東天」など。花色は桃色のほか、白色、赤色、黄色、橙色、複色もあります。さらに変種の「クーペリー」は花が大きく、クリーム色。種小名は米国の博物学者ジェームズ・グラハム・クーパーに由来します。

キルタンサスの近縁「サンギネウス」種は大きな６弁花の夏咲き。種小名は「血のような紅色」という意味で花色に由来します。一方、同じく夏咲きの「エラタス」種は「草丈が高い」という意味。そして、両種を交配させた「キルロータ」種は大きな朱色の花をたくさん咲かせます。

Ifafa Lily is a perennial plant of Amaryllidaceae. The place of origin is South Africa, and the mackenii was introduced to Japan at the end of the Meiji period. It used to be a low-key winter cut flower, but in recent years, the distribution of bulbs for potted and ground planting has expanded. The flower blooms looking down, so there is a flower language called “shy”.
Name of Ifafa Lily
Ifafa Lily’s genus name Cyrtanthus means “curved flower” and is derived from the way the flower blooms. The species name mackenii comes from Mark Johnston Macken, the first curator of the Durban Botanical Gardens, which was established in South Africa in 1849. The English name “Ifafa Lily” comes from the name of the region in eastern South Africa.

The Japanese name of Ifafa Lily is “Whistling Narcissus”, because its leaves resemble daffodils and its flowers resemble flutes. Long and thin leaves are stretched from the bulb, flower stems are stretched from between them, and long and thin cylindrical flowers bloom downward at the tip of the flower stem. The flowers have a sweet, fruity scent that attracts night moths for pollination. After flowering, it produces egg-shaped capsules.

Ifafa Lily is closely related to “Sanguineus”, which blooms in summer with large six-petaled flowers. The species name is derived from the flower color in the sense of “red like blood”. On the other hand, the “Elatus”, which also blooms in summer, means “tall”. And the “Cyrllota”, which is a hybrid of both species, blooms a lot of large vermilion flowers.
