オダマキの生態
オダマキはキンポウゲ科の多年草。北米から欧州、アジアにかけて約70種が分布しています。日本では山野に２種が自生し、おもに欧州原産の改良種が園芸用に栽培。なお、全草に毒性のあるプロトアネモニンを含み、触れると皮膚がかぶれたり、口に入ると胃腸炎を引き起こします。
オダマキの名前
オダマキの名前の由来は、花の形が機織りの糸巻きに似ていたから。「苧」は繊維作物で、苧を丸く巻き付けたものが「苧玉」です。苧玉を巻くもの「おだままき」が転じて「おだまき」に。この中空の糸巻きに、丸みを帯びた筒状の花弁が似ているので、同じ名前が付けられました。
オダマキの形態
オダマキは根生葉の間から花茎を伸ばし、蕾が下を向いて着生。英名コロンバインは「鳩」という意味で、蕾の形が似ているからです。花は俯くように咲いて、外側に萼が５枚、内側に花弁が５枚、後ろに距が５つ。学名アキレギアは「鷲」という意味で、距の形が似ているからです。
オダマキの種類
日本原産の「深山苧環」は花が青紫色で、花弁の先端が白色。本州中北部の山地に分布しています。「山苧環」は萼片が赤紫色、花弁が黄色。北海道～九州の山野に自生しています。北欧原産の「西洋苧環」は花色が多く、咲き方も一重咲きから八重咲きまで。全国に普及しています。

This hollow pincushion is given the same name because it resembles a rounded tubular petal.
