アガパンサスの姿
アガパンサスはヒガンバナ科の多年草です。原産地は南アフリカで、日本へは明治時代に渡来。植えっぱなしでも難なく育つため、公園の花壇などに植えられます。爽やかな涼感のある青紫色の花、真っすぐに伸びる茎、厚みと光沢のある力強い葉。切り花や生け花にも用いられます。
アガパンサスの英名
アガパンサスは直立した茎の先端から花火のように枝が出て、その先に１つずつ、ユリに似た花弁６枚の花が咲きます。そのため、英名は「アフリカンリリー」。花は外側から内側へと順に咲いて噴水のようです。その美しさからラテン語の属名アガパンサスは「愛の花」という意味。
アガパンサスの和名
アガパンサスの葉は線形で地際から直接生える根出葉。地下では鱗茎を持たず、太い根が張ります。根の強さは土手や法面の土留めにも用いられるほど。この葉と根が、同じヒガンバナ科で遠縁の「クンシラン」に似ていて、青紫色の花を咲かせることから、和名は「紫君子蘭」です。
アガパンサスの種類
アガパンサスの種類は様々です。大きさは草丈が１ｍを越える高いものから膝丈にも満たない低いものまで。冬に茎葉が枯れるものもあれば枯れないものもあります。花は、濃い紫色から薄い紫色、白色まで。花筒が短い盃状から、花冠の切れ込みが深い星形、ラッパ形まであります。
