ウキツリボクはアオイ科イチビ属の蔓性低木。原産地はブラジルで、世界の熱帯から亜熱帯にかけて広く自生しています。寒さに強く、日本でも関東地方南部なら野外で越冬可能。日当たり、水はけの良いところを好みます。ランタンのような花で、赤色と黄色の組み合わせが鮮やか。

ウキツリボクの枝は細くしなやかな蔓性です。葉は互生し、ハート形や長披針形で先が尖り、縁に粗いギザギザ。花は葉腋から伸びた柄で吊り下がり、赤色の蕚が袋状で５稜、その下に淡い黄色の花弁が５枚、その下に濃い赤色の雄しべが花柱とともに突き出ます。花後に蒴果を形成。

アブチロン・ミレリは浮釣木と猩猩花の自然交雑種。萼が暗い赤紫色、花弁が橙黄色で脈が入ります。アブチロン・ヒブリドゥムは浮釣木を含む種間雑種や突然変異から育成された品種群。これらの品種が浮釣木や猩猩花とともに園芸名で「アブチロン」と総称されることもあります。
