カッコウソウの名前
カッコウソウの名前の由来は夏鳥の「郭公」が鳴くころ、花が咲くから。別名は草姿が近縁種「草石蚕」に似ているからです。ラテン語の属名ベトニカは帝政ローマ時代にイベリア半島中西部に住んでいた「ヴェットーネ族」に由来。種小名オフィシナリスは「薬用」という意味です。
カッコウソウの姿形
カッコウソウは細い髭根が生えます。茎は直立し、断面が四角形。葉は対生し、長楕円形で縁に鋸歯が入ります。茎も葉も白色の細毛が密生。花は小さな唇形花が６つずつ輪生し、穂状に集まって咲きます。小花は上唇と下唇が円形、中裂片と側裂片が卵形。花後に４分果を結びます。
カッコウソウの利用
カッコウソウは開花時期に刈って干した茎葉が生薬になります。成分はスタキドリン、トリゴネリン、タンニン、サポニン、作用は鎮静、利尿、健胃、強壮、収斂など。不安、胆石、胸焼け、高血圧、偏頭痛、神経痛、切り傷などに用いられますが、毒性もあるため、注意が必要です。
