チューリップの生産
チューリップはユリ科の多年草です。原産地はトルコのアナトリア地方で、欧州に伝わったのは16世紀頃。現在はオランダが世界の球根生産の主要産地です。他家受粉で結実する両性花ですが、実生（種子）による繁殖は開花まで何年もかかるため、分球（球根）による繁殖が一般的。
チューリップの伝来
チューリップの日本への伝来は江戸時代ですが、本格的な球根栽培が始まったのは大正時代から。富山県と新潟県で相次いで取り組まれ、今でも両県が国内の球根生産の主要産地です。和名の「鬱金香」の由来は、花の香りが当初、食品を黄色く染めるウコンのように埃臭かったから。

チューリップの早生種は４月上旬から開花。草丈が低いのでプランターや花壇に向いています。中生種は中旬から開花。草丈があって花色も豊富なので切り花としても楽しめます。晩生種は下旬から開花。草丈が高く、咲き方も多様で華やかです。一方、原種は開花が早く、３月から。
チューリップの系統
チューリップの系統は、一重咲きや八重咲きのほか、花色に富むトライアンフ系、花が大きいダーウィン・ハイブリッド系、花弁が細く反るユリ咲き系、縁飾りのフリンジ咲き系、深く切れ込むパーロット咲き系、中央が緑色のビリディフローラ系、斑入りのレンブラント系などです。
チューリップの食用
チューリップの球根はデンプンが豊富。オランダでは食用種の栽培が盛んで、お菓子などに加工されます。花もサラダや炒め物などで歯触りがよく、ほのかな甘味もあり、日本でも生産が増加中。ただし、一般の園芸品種は灰汁が強く、毒性のあるツリピンも含まれるので要注意です。
