ヤライコウの名前
ヤライコウの名前は中国語「夜来香（イエライシャン）」の当て読み。夜来香は「夜になると香る」という意味で、香る時に由来します。ラテン語の属名テロスマは「遠くまで香る」という意味で、香る強さに由来。種小名コルダータは「心臓形の」という意味で、葉の形を表します。
ヤライコウの姿形
ヤライコウの茎は緑色～褐色の蔓性。他物に絡みつきながら伸び広がります。葉は柄が長く、対生のハート型。明るい緑色で光沢があり、掌状脈が目立ちます。花は筒状で花被が５裂、雄しべが５本、雌しべが５裂。10～30輪が集まって咲き、時間とともに緑色から黄色に変わります。

ヤライコウは観賞用に庭植え、鉢植えされるほか、花が香料や香水に用いられました。中国南部～東南アジアでは葉が野菜に、花が香辛料に、民間療法では花や根が咳止めや健胃などに。一方、1944年に歌われた「夜来香」によって甘く切ない花として広く知られるようになりました。

The Japanese name for Night-fragrant Flower is a play on the Chinese name. The Chinese name means “fragrant at night.” The Latin genus name, Telosma, means “fragrant far away.” The specific epithet, cordata, means “heart-shaped” and describes the shape of the leaves.
Night-fragrant flower’s stems are green to brown, vines that grow and spread, twining around other objects. The leaves are long-stalked, opposite, and heart-shaped. They are bright green and glossy, with prominent palmate veins. The flowers are tubular with a five-lobed perianth, five stamens, and a five-lobed pistil. Ten to 30 flowers bloom in clusters, turning from green to yellow over time.
