セイヨウフウチョウソウはフウチョウソウ科の一年草。原産地はメキシコからペルーにかけての熱帯アメリカです。蝶が舞うような美しい花を咲かせることから世界中に栽培が拡大。日本へは1870年代に観賞用で持ち込まれて逸出し、本州以南の路傍や河川敷などで自生しています。
セイヨウフウチョウソウの形態
セイヨウフウチョウソウは茎が真っ直ぐに立ち上がり、その先端に花が着きます。開花は下から順に進み、花の造りは萼片４枚、花弁４枚、長い雄しべが４本。それぞれの花は夕方に開き、２日間で萎れます。花後は柄の先に細長い蒴果が着き、熟すと果皮が２つに裂けて種子を飛散。
セイヨウフウチョウソウの栽培
セイヨウフウチョウソウの栽培は容易。放置してもこぼれ種で育ちます。ただし、移植を嫌うので栽培は直播きで。また、水揚げが悪いので、切り花には向きません。改良品種「ピンククイーン」は開花１日目が桃色で、２日目が白色。そのため、花穂が桃色と白色の２段になります。
