ヨウシュヤマゴボウの生態
ヨウシュヤマゴボウはヤマゴボウ科の多年草です。原産地は北米で、日本へは明治時代の初期に伝来。夏の暑さにも冬の寒さにも強く、野山から道端まで、各地で大きく育ちます。草丈だけでなく、根も太く長いことが和名の由来。また、果実から染料が採れたことが英名の由来です。
ヨウシュヤマゴボウの和名
ヨウシュヤマゴボウの和名の由来は西洋から持ち込まれ、野山に自生していて、根が牛蒡のように太く長いから。山牛蒡は日本在来の近縁種で、同じような毒性があります。一方、たまり漬けなど「山牛蒡」で売られているのはキク科の多年草で「森薊」。ヤマゴボウ属とは遠縁です。
ヨウシュヤマゴボウの英名
ヨウシュヤマゴボウの英名インクベリーの由来は果実から紅い染料が採れたから。毒性があるにもかかわらず、アメリカ合衆国では、かつて安価なワインの着色にも用いられました。もう一つの英名ポークウィードは「突つき草」といった意味。残念ながら名前の由来はわかりません。

ヨウシュヤマゴボウには毒性があります。成分はアルカロイド、サポニン、アグリコンなど。誤食すると、２時間くらいで強い嘔吐や下痢が起こります。摂取量が多いと、さらに中枢神経麻痺から痙攣や意識障害が発生。最悪の場合、呼吸障害や心臓麻痺を引き起こして死に至ります。
