ホオズキの萼
ホオズキはナス科ホオズキ属の一年草または多年草です。淡い黄色の花を6月から7月に咲かせた後、萼のところが果実を包んで袋状に。これが熟すと緑色から橙色に変わります。
ホオズキの漢字
ホオズキは漢字で「鬼灯」と書きます。これは、お盆にご先祖様が帰ってくるときの提灯にしたから。死者（鬼）を導く目印として、ホオズキが枝付きで精霊棚（盆棚）に飾られました。
ホオズキの毒性
ホオズキには全草に微量のアルカロイドが含まれています。特に地下茎と根には子宮の緊縮作用があるヒストニンを含有。江戸時代に堕胎剤として利用されていたほどです。
ホオズキと遊び
その一方で、ホオズキは昔から子どもたちの遊びに使われてきました。ホオズキを人形にしたり、中身を取り除き、口に含んで音を鳴らしたり、風船のように膨らませたり。
ホオズキの名前
ホオズキの呼び名にはいくつかの由来があります。子どもたちが口に含んで音を鳴らして遊ぶ様子から「頬突き」。ふっくらとした赤い実が頬のようだから「頬づき」。実が赤く火（ほ）がついたようだから「ほほつき」。
ホオズキの生薬
ホオズキの地下茎と根は毒性があるとともに、酸漿根（さんしょうこん）という生薬でもあります。平安時代から鎮静剤として利用され、現在も咳や痰、解熱、冷え性などに用いられています。

Physalis kanji
Hozuki is written in Chinese characters as “demon lantern”. This is because I used it as a lantern when my ancestors returned to Obon. A physalis was displayed on the spirit shelf (basin shelf) with branches as a mark to guide the dead (demon).
Toxicity of Physalis
Physalis contains trace amounts of alkaloids in its whole plant. In particular, the rhizomes and roots contain histonin, which has a uterine austerity effect. It was even used as an abortion agent in the Edo period.
Play with physalis
On the other hand, physalis has long been used for children’s play. Turn a physalis into a doll, remove its contents, put it in your mouth to make a sound, or inflate it like a balloon.
Hozuki’s name
The name Hozuki has several origins. “Cheek thrust” from the appearance of children playing with their mouths and making sounds. The plump red fruits are like cheeks, so “cheeks”. The fruit seems to be red and lit, so it’s called “cheeks”.

The rhizomes and roots of Physalis alkekengi are toxic and are also a crude drug called Sanshokon. It has been used as a sedative since the Heian period, and is still used for coughing, sputum, antipyretic, and poor circulation.
