ルリトウワタの和名
ルリトウワタはキョウチクトウ科のつる性多年草。原産地はブラジル南部～ウルグアイです。オーストラリア～ニュージーランドで帰化後、観賞用として世界中に拡大。花色が青く、同じガガイモ亜科のトウワタのように種子に冠毛が生えることから「瑠璃唐綿」と名づけられました。
ルリトウワタの英名
ルリトウワタは日本で「ブルースター」とも呼ばれますが、英語でブルースターは通常チョウジソウ属の花のことです。以前は古い属名で「ツイーディア」と呼ばれましたが、今は新しい属名に変更。属名オキシペタラムは「鋭い花弁」、種名カエルレウムは「空色」という意味です。
ルリトウワタの形態
ルリトウワタの茎は傷つけると毒性のある白色の乳液が出ます。葉は緑灰色で毛に覆われていて、その葉腋から花梗が伸びて分枝。その先端に星型の５弁花が咲きます。花は明るい青色ですが、開花の前（蕾）と終わりはピンク色。果実は大きな蒴果で、種子には白い冠毛があります。

Southern star is a perennial vine of the Apocynaceae family. The place of origin is from southern Brazil to Uruguay. After naturalization in Australia-New Zealand, it has been expanded worldwide for ornamental purposes. It was named “Ruri Towata” because its flower color is blue and the seeds have pappus like milkweed of the same subfamily Gagaimo.
