ネモフィラはムラサキ科ルリカラクサ属の１年草で北米西部に自生しています。茎は匍匐性、葉は羽状で対生または互生、花はお椀形で花弁が５枚。毒性も薬効もありませんが、「インシグニスブルー」とも呼ばれ、息をのむような青色の花々が心身の昂ぶりを静め、疲れを癒します。
ネモフィラの名前
ネモフィラの名前の由来はラテン語の属名。「小さな森を愛する」という意味で自生地に由来します。種小名メンジージーはスコットランドの植物学者アーチボルド・メンジーズへの献名。和名「瑠璃唐草」は花色と葉の形状に由来します。英名は「赤ちゃんの青色の瞳」という意味。
ネモフィラの変種
ネモフィラ・メンジージーの変種「ディスコイダリス」は、黒紫色の花冠の縁に白色の覆輪が入り、「ペニーブラック」という品種名で流通。変種「アトマリア」は、白色の花冠に小さな黒紫色の斑点が入り、「スノーストーム」という品種名で流通しています。いずれも花が小さめ。
