タンチョウソウの概要
タンチョウソウはユキノシタ科の多年草。原産地は中国東北部～朝鮮半島で、山地の湿った岩場や渓流沿いの斜面などに群生しています。日本へは明治時代に渡来。寒さに強く、屋外の鉢植えや庭植えで育ちます。すらりと伸びた茎の先に群れ咲く花々。湿原に立つ鶴たちのようです。
タンチョウソウの名前
タンチョウソウの和名の由来は丹頂鶴の頭のように蕾が赤色、花が白色の草だからです。別名の由来は「岩」に自生し、葉が「八手」のように切れ込んでいるから。英名マンチュリアン・ロックフォイルは「満州の雪の下」、別名クリムゾン・ファンズは「深紅の扇」という意味です。
タンチョウソウの学名
タンチョウソウの種小名ロッシーは英国スコットランドのキリスト教宣教師ジョン・ロスへの献名です。属名ムクデニアはロスの活動拠点だった満州の奉天（ムクデン）に由来。ロスは現地での伝道、聖書の朝鮮語訳、教育・医療支援のかたわら、植物を採集し、本国へと送りました。

タンチョウソウは太い多肉質の根茎で岩にしがみつき、しなやかな花茎を立ち上げます。葉は厚みのある掌状で５～９裂。表面に鈍い光沢、縁に粗い鋸歯があります。花は小さく、花弁が５枚、雄しべが10本。花茎の先に赤色の蕾が連なり、白色の花々が咲きます。花後は蒴果を形成。
Manchurian Rockfoil
Native to northeastern China and the Korean Peninsula, it typically grows in colonies on moist rocky slopes and along mountain streams. Since its introduction to Japan in the Meiji era, it has been widely cultivated in gardens and pots for its cold-hardiness.
In Japan, it is known as Tancho-sou (Red-crowned Crane Herb) for its floral colors, and Iwa-yatsude (Rock Aralia) for its lobed foliage and rocky habitat. The English common name “Crimson Fans” is also used.
The genus name Mukdenia refers to Mukden (Fengtian), the base of operations for the Scottish missionary John Ross, for whom the species rossii is named. Alongside his evangelical and medical work, Ross was a prolific plant collector who contributed significantly to the botanical study of the region.
The species features thick, succulent rhizomes that cling to rock surfaces. Its palmate leaves are 5–9 lobed with serrated margins and a matte finish. The inflorescence consists of small, five-petaled white flowers that emerge from reddish buds. Following pollination, the plant produces fruit in the form of capsules.
