ハクモクレンはモクレン科の落葉高木です。原産地は中国で、日本へは古くに渡来し、庭園や公園に植栽。春なかばの葉が伸びる前、芳香のある花を上向きに半開させます。日の当たる南側の花被片が膨らむため、すべての花が北向きに。花言葉は「荘厳」「崇高」「慈悲」などです。
ハクモクレンの名前
ハクモクレンの名前の由来は、「蓮」に似た花を咲かせる「木」で、その花が「白」色だから。ラテン語の属名マグノリアは17～18世紀のフランスの植物学者ピエール・マニョルへの献名です。種小名デヌダータは「裸の」という意味で、袋果が熟すと割れて中の種子が露出するため。
ハクモクレンの姿形
ハクモクレンの冬芽は軟毛に覆われ、花芽が大きく白色、葉芽が小さく灰色。葉は互生し、先端の幅が広く、末端が狭く、相撲の軍配のような形です。花は花被片が９枚で、みな同じ形ですが、６枚が花弁、３枚が萼片。中央に黄緑色の雌しべが立ち、周りを多くの雄しべが囲みます。
ハクモクレンと木蓮
ハクモクレンと同じモクレン属の「木蓮」は、花が赤紫色なので「紫木蓮」とも呼ばれます。原産地が中国で、花が上向きに咲くところは同じですが、樹が一回り小さな低木で、花と一緒に葉も展開。欧州で育成された「更紗木蓮」は白木蓮と木蓮の交配種で、花が桃色の小高木です。
ハクモクレンと辛夷
ハクモクレンと同じモクレン属の「辛夷」は、同じ時期に、同じ白色で花被片９枚の花を咲かせます。原産地は日本で、国内では北海道、本州、九州に、国外では朝鮮半島の済州島に分布。見分け方は花芽が一回り小さく、花被片が華奢で、花冠が平開し、花の下に葉が１枚つきます。

The language of flowers is “solemn”, “sublime”, and “mercy”.
Name of Lilytree
The Japanese name of Lilytree means that “tree” with flowers similar to “lotus” and the flowers are “white” in color. The Latin genus Magnolia is a tribute to the 17th-18th century French botanist Pierre Magnol. The specific epithet Denudata means “naked”, because when the pods ripen, they split open to expose the seeds inside.

The winter buds of Lilytree are covered with soft hairs, the flower buds are large and white, and the leaf buds are small and gray. The leaves are alternate, wide at the tip and narrow at the end, shaped like a fan. The flower has 9 tepals, all of which have the same shape, but 6 petals and 3 sepals. Kobus, which belongs to the same magnolia genus as Lilytree, blooms at the same time with the same white flowers with nine petals. Originating in Japan, it is distributed domestically in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, and overseas on Jeju Island on the Korean Peninsula. The flower buds are one size smaller, the petals are delicate, the corolla is flat, and one leaf is attached to the bottom of the flower.
