ガウラは花つきがよく、初夏から晩秋まで長く咲き続けます。花の形からハクチョウソウ、花の色からヤマモモソウとも呼ばれます。

ガウラの開花期間
ガウラはアカバナ科ヤマモモソウ属の多年草です。原産地は北アメリカ。日本へは明治時代に入ってきました。夏の暑さに強く、開花期間も初夏の５月から晩秋の10月まで長期に渡ります。
ガウラの花の色
ガウラは小さな白い花が穂状に連なって咲きます。その花の咲き方から花言葉は「清楚」「繊細な心」「傷つけない」。花の色が淡い桃色であることから「ヤマモモソウ」とも呼ばれます。
ガウラの花の形
ガウラの４枚の花弁と長い雄しべが風に揺れると白い蝶々が飛んでいるように見えます。蝶が花から花へと舞う様子から「ハクチョウソウ」とも呼ばれ、「行きずりの恋」という花言葉も。

ガウラは１つの花が短命で、３日ほどで散るものの、花つきがよく、ほぼ途切れることなく咲き続けます。そのような咲き方から「負けず嫌い」「我慢できない」という花言葉もあります。
