パイナップルリリーの生態
パイナップルリリーはキジカクシ科の多年草。原産地はアフリカ中南部で、草丈の小さな原種は丘陵地の草原に、大きな原種は谷筋の湿地に自生しています。いずれも寒さに強いものの、乾燥が苦手。花茎は夏の暑い時期に日持ちのする花材として流通しています。花言葉は「完璧」。
パイナップルリリーの名前
パイナップルリリーの名前の由来は、花の姿がクラウンのついたパイナップルに似ているからです。属名のユーコミスも、ラテン語で「美しい髪の毛」という意味で、花茎先端の苞葉を喩えたもの。この苞葉の形から「星万年青」という和名もありますが、ほとんど使われていません。

パイナップルリリーは地際から柱のように花茎が立ち上がります。下から順に咲き上がる小さな星型の花々。行き着く先は王冠のような苞葉です。花後は熟すと弾ける蒴果を形成。黒褐色の種子をたくさん飛ばします。葉は地際から直に生える根出葉。披針形で縁が大きく波打ちます。
パイナップルリリーの種類
パイナップルリリーの代表種「ユーコミス・アウツムナリス」（別名「ユーコミス・ウンドゥラータ」）は花が淡黄色でパイナップルの名にふさわしい外観。そのほか、花色に富む「ユーコミス・コモサ」や、葉も花も暗紫色の小型種「ユーコミス・バンデルメルウェイ」があります。

Eucomis autumnalis (also known as Eucomis undulata), a representative type of Pineapple Lily, has pale yellow flowers and an appearance suitable for the name of pineapple. In addition, there are “Eucomis comosa” with rich flower colors and “Eucomis vandermerwei”, a small type with dark purple leaves and flowers.
