デンドロビウム・ノビルの概要
デンドロビウム・ノビルはラン科の多年草です。中国南部～インド北部の高地に分布し、陽当たり、風通しの良い樹上や岩場に着生。18世紀後半に改良用原種として英国へと持ち込まれました。交配親として育成された多くの品種は「ノビル系」と総称。清楚な花々が美しく香ります。
デンドロビウム・ノビルの名前
デンドロビウム・ノビルの名前はラテン語の学名に由来。属名は「樹木に着生する」、種小名は「気品のある」という意味です。英名ノーブル・デンドロビウムも「高貴な着生蘭」といった意味。標準和名「匂石斛」も牧野富太郎博士による別名「高貴石斛」もほぼ使われていません。

デンドロビウム・ノビルは株の基部から棒状の偽球茎が幾本か直立し、節ごとに葉が互生。葉は葉鞘の長い楕円形で光沢があり、１～２年で落ちます。花は上方に背萼片、左右に側萼片と側花弁、下方に唇弁、真ん中に髄柱。節ごとに短い花茎を伸ばして咲き、蝋質で芳香があります。

デンドロビウム・ノビルの近縁種「石斛」は日本の本州、四国、九州に分布し、樹上や岩場に着生。冬に葉を落とし、春に新芽が膨らみ、夏に美しく香る花を咲かせます。寒さや乾燥に強く、丈夫で育てやすい東洋蘭。江戸時代には「長生蘭」と呼ばれ、斑入りの葉が愛でられました。
Noble Dendrobium
Noble Dendrobium is a perennial plant of the Orchidaceae family. It is distributed in the highlands of southern China and northern India, and grows on trees and rocks in sunny, well-ventilated areas. It was brought to England in the late 18th century as a breeding species for improvement. Many varieties cultivated as breeding parents are collectively called “Nobile type”. The neat flowers have a beautiful fragrance.
The name Noble Dendrobium comes from the Latin scientific name. The genus name means “epiphytic on trees” and the specific name means “dignified”. The English name Noble Dendrobium also means “noble epiphytic orchid”. The standard Japanese name means “Fragrant Dendrobium”, but it is rarely used.
Noble Dendrobium has several rod-shaped pseudobulbs that grow upright from the base of the plant, with leaves that grow alternately at each node. The leaves are oval with long leaf sheaths and are shiny, and fall off after 1-2 years. The flowers have a dorsal sepal at the top, lateral sepals and lateral petals on the left and right, a lip petal at the bottom, and a pith in the middle. They bloom on short flower stalks that grow at each node, and are waxy and fragrant.
Dendrobium moniliforme, a close relative of Noble Dendrobium, is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan, and grows on trees and rocks. It loses its leaves in winter, new shoots swell in spring, and blooms beautifully with a fragrant flower in summer. It is a strong, easy-to-grow orchid that is resistant to cold and dryness. In the Edo period, it was called the “orchid of longevity” and was loved for its variegated leaves.
