Crepidiastrum denticulatum
Crepidiastrum denticulatum is a biennial plant of the Asteraceae family. In Japan, it is distributed from Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and overseas from the Korean Peninsula to China, Taiwan, Indonesia, and India. It grows in clusters in sunny fields and mountains. The flower language is “lively”. It blooms bright yellow flowers at the end of autumn when there are few flowers.
The Japanese name of Crepidiastrum denticulatum means “Buddha who heals people’s illnesses”. There are various theories about the origin of the Japanese name, such as that the shape of the leaves and flowers resembles the decoration on the back of the Buddha statue, or that it was used as a medicinal herb for skin swelling, but there is no consensus. The Latin genus name Crepidiastrum means “resembling Crepis”, and the specific name denticulatum means “fine-toothed”.
The stems of Crepidiastrum denticulatum are hairless, erect at the bottom, and branched at the top. The basal leaves are spoon-shaped with long stalks. The cauline leaves are violin-shaped with pointed tips, stalkless, and alternate around the stem. The flowers bloom facing upwards, with 12 to 14 ray flowers. After flowering, the flowers turn downwards to form an achene, and black seeds with white pappus are carried on the wind.
“Youngia japonica”, whose flowers are similar to Crepidiastrum denticulatum, is a biennial plant of the Asteraceae family. The stems are covered with fine hairs, and the compound leaves, which are pinnately lobed, spread out radially. “Ixeridium dentatum” is a perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. The flowers bloom in early summer, have only 8 to 10 perianth petals, and the stamens are black-brown.
