フウセンカズラの名前
フウセンカズラの名前の由来は、蒴果が紙風船のように丸く膨らんだ袋状で、蔓性植物だから。英名バルーンバインも同様の意味です。ラテン語の属名カルディオスペルマムや英名ハートシードは「心臓のような模様の種子」、種小名ハリカカブムは「鬼灯のような果実」という意味。
フウセンカズラの姿形
フウセンカズラの根は細かい繊維状で、浅く広がります。蔓は断面が星形で中空。葉腋から巻きひげを伸ばして他物に絡みつきます。葉は互生の２回３出複葉。小葉は卵形～披針形で、縁に不規則な鋸歯があります。花は萼片が４枚、花弁が４枚、雄しべが８本、雌しべの柱頭が３裂。

フウセンカズラは稀に雌花と雄花があるものの、ほとんどが両性花。蒴果は３稜の袋状で、薄い膜に網目状の脈が走り、産毛に覆われます。蒴果が緑色から褐色へと熟すと袋が破れ、中から３つの種子が露出。種子は黒色の球形で、付着部分のへそに白色でハート形の模様があります。

The Japanese name for Balloon Vine means “paper balloon vine” because its capsules are round, inflated, and sac-shaped like paper balloons. The Latin genus name Cardiospermum means “heart-shaped seed,” and the specific name halicacabum means “flower lantern-like fruit.”
Balloon Vine roots are finely fibrous and spread shallowly. The vines are star-shaped and hollow in cross section. Tendrils extend from the axils and twine around other plants. The leaves are alternate, bifoliate, and compound. The leaflets are ovate to lanceolate with irregularly toothed edges. Flowers have four sepals, four petals, eight stamens, and a three-lobed stigma.
Balloon Vine flowers are mostly bisexual, although occasionally there are both female and male flowers. The capsules are three-sided, pouch-shaped, with a thin membrane, reticulated veins, and covered in downy hairs. As the capsules ripen, turning from green to brown, the pouch bursts, revealing three seeds. The seeds are black and spherical, with a white, heart-shaped hilum at the hilum where they attach.
