Yesterday-today-and-tomorrow
They are an evergreen shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family. They are native to tropical Central and South America and the West Indies. They were introduced to Japan as an ornamental plant in the late Meiji period. In warm areas, they are planted outdoors, and in cold areas, they are indoors in pots. They flower well, blooming continuously from spring to autumn, and the whole tree is covered with flowers in midsummer.
Their Japanese name, Nioibanmatsuri, means “scented foreign jasmine.” The English name “Yesterday-today-and-tomorrow” is abbreviation of “The flowers that were violet yesterday are light purple today and will be white tomorrow”. The scientific name “Brunfelsia” is also used as a horticultural name.
The leaves of them are alternate. They have a long oval shape with a shiny upper surface and hairy undersides. The flowers are funnel-shaped and have five petals. They have a refreshing fragrance. The flowers are violet at the beginning of blooming, light purple in the middle, and white at the end of blooming. Three colors of flowers bloom together on one tree, so there is a flower language called “a flirtatious person”.
While there are positive flower words such as “luck” and “enthusiasm” in them, the whole tree is actually toxic. In particular, the fruit contains a large amount of the toxic ingredient brunfersamidin, so be careful. If a dog or cat accidentally ingests it, symptoms such as vomiting, convulsions, and lightheadedness may occur, and it may even lead to death.
