イブキトラノオはタデ科の多年草。北アフリカから欧州、東アジアまで広域に分布し、日本では亜種が北海道から本州、四国、九州まで分布します。山地で日当たりがよく、やや湿ったところに群生。淡紅色の花穂が風に揺れると、虎というより、母猫に甘える子猫の尻尾のようです。
イブキトラノオの名前
イブキトラノオの名前の由来は、滋賀県と岐阜県の境にある伊吹山での自生が知られ、花穂を虎の尻尾に見立てたからです。伊吹山は戦国時代の武将・織田信長が薬草園を開いたところ。ラテン語の属名ビストルタは「二重に捩れた」という意味で、曲がりくねった根茎に由来します。

イブキトラノオの根茎は黒く太く地中を這い広がります。茎は叢生し、葉は根出葉が長楕円形、茎葉が披針形で互生。花は茎先に小花が密集し、穂のように立ち上がります。小花は花弁のような萼片が５枚、雄しべが８本、雌しべが３裂。花後の痩果は黒く光沢のある種子をつけます。
