シュウカイドウはベゴニア属の多年草。原産地は中国の山東省～河北省です。日本には江戸時代初期に園芸用として持ち込まれて帰化。直射日光の当たらない、湿気の多い場所を好みます。

シュウカイドウの名前の由来は、まず花が秋に咲くから。俳句でも秋の季語です。そして、花の桃色や茎葉に垂れ下がって咲くところがバラ科の落葉高木である「花海棠」に似ているから。
