レンゲショウマはキンポウゲ科レンゲショウマ属の多年草。本州の東北地方南部～近畿地方の太平洋側に分布し、薄暗く湿り気のある落葉樹林内で密やかに自生しています。楚々として幽玄な佇まいから、花言葉は「伝統美」。妖精のような白色の花々が微かに甘い香りを漂わせます。
レンゲショウマの名前
レンゲショウマの名前の由来は、花が蓮に似ているので「蓮華」、葉が晒菜升麻に似ているので「升麻」。英名は「アネモネもどき」という意味でラテン語の属名に由来します。ラテン語の属名アネモノプシスは「アネモネに似た」、種小名マクロフィラは「大きな葉の」という意味。
レンゲショウマの姿形
レンゲショウマは根茎が伸び、根生葉とともに茎葉が互生。三出複葉で、縁に切れ込みと鋸歯が入ります。花は下を向いて咲き、花弁のように見える大きな萼片が外側に10枚くらい、副花冠のように見える小さな花弁が内側に10枚くらい。花後の袋果は熟すと裂けて種子を散らします。

レンゲショウマは園芸種もあり、花弁がすべて白色で先端に青紫色が入らないもの、花冠が八重咲きのもの、葉に斑が入るものがあります。一方「黄蓮華升麻」は同じように下を向いて咲き、名前が似ているものの、姿形が似ていない黄色の５弁花。分類もアジサイ科なので遠縁です。

The language of flowers is “traditional beauty” due to its neat and subtle appearance. The fairy-like white flowers have a faintly sweet scent.
Name of False Anemone
False Anemone’s Japanese name means “cimicifuga simplex of lotus flower”. Because the flowers resemble lotus and the leaves resemble Cimicifuga simplex. The English name False Anemone comes from the Latin genus name. The Latin genus Anemonopsis means “anemone-like” and the specific epithet Macrophylla means “large-leaved”.
Appearance of False Anemone
False Anemone has underground rhizomes, and basal leaves and alternate stem leaves above ground. It is a trifoliate compound leaf with notches and serrations on the edges. The flowers bloom facing downward, with about 10 large sepals on the outside that look like petals, and about 10 small petals on the inside that look like secondary corollas. After the flower, the bag fruit splits when ripe and scatters the seeds.
Type of False Anemone
There are also garden varieties of False Anemone, including those with all white petals and no bluish-purple tips, those with double corollas, and those with mottled leaves. On the other hand, the Japanese name for Kirengeshoma palmata means “yellow False Anemone”. It blooms downward like False Anemone, but it has yellow five-petaled flowers that are not similar to False Anemone in appearance. The classification is also Hydrangeaceae, so it is not a close relative.
