アルストロメリアはアルストロメリア属の単子葉植物。花は4月から７月にかけて長く咲きます。日本には大正15年に渡来。冷涼な環境を好むことから、長野県で栽培が広がりました。

アルストロメリアは南アメリカ原産でアンデス山脈の寒冷地に自生。そこで植物の分類で有名なカール・フォン・リンネによって採集され、親友の男爵の名前にちなんで名付けられました。
