フェイジョアはフトモモ科の常緑低木～小高木の果樹。果皮が硬く、果肉が軟らかい、甘酸っぱい果実が採れます。原産地は中南米で、日本へは昭和初期に米国から渡来。白色と桃色の求肥に赤色と黄色の飴細工を飾り付けたようなお花が咲きます。花言葉は「情熱に燃える心」など。
フェイジョアの名前
フェイジョアの名前の由来はラテン語の古い属名。18～19世紀のポルトガル人で博物学者のフェイホアへの献名です。新しい属名アッカは、アルファベットの「Ｈ」を意味するものの、命名の由来は不明。種小名セロウィアナは18～19世紀のドイツ人で植物学者のセロウへの献名です。

フェイジョアの木は枝が盛んに分岐し、樹皮が灰色です。葉は肉厚の楕円形で互生。葉表は光沢があって緑色、葉裏は綿毛が密生して白色です。花は花弁が４枚で厚く、外側が白色、内側が桃色。雄しべは花糸が赤色、葯が黄色、雌しべは赤色で突き出ます。花後は緑色の果実が肥大。

フェイジョアの英名パイナップルグァバの由来は、果実の甘酸っぱい風味がパイナップルに、花の形がグァバに似ているからです。果実はビタミンＣが豊富で芳香もあり、自然に落ちたものを追熟して生食、ジュース、ジャムに。花も花弁に甘味があり、サラダに添えて食べられます。
