アンドログラフィスはキツネノマゴ科の一年草。原産地はインド〜スリランカで、南アジア、東南アジア、東アジアに分布が拡がりました。古くから薬草として栽培され、日本へは近代以降に健胃薬で渡来。根や葉に強い苦味がある一方、鶴や狐のような可愛らしい花々を咲かせます。
アンドログラフィスの名前
アンドログラフィスは属名で、「雄しべに線状の模様がある」という意味です。種小名パニクラタは「円錐状の花序をもつ」という意味。和名センシンレンは中国名「穿心蓮」の音読みで「心を貫くほどの強い苦味がある」、英名キングオブビターズも「苦味の王様」という意味です。

アンドログラフィスの根は細い直根と側根が伸長。茎は暗緑色で縦溝のある四稜です。葉は柄が短く、対生の披針形。花は左右相称の唇形です。上唇が３裂、下唇が２裂、雄しべが２本、雌しべの柱頭がわずかに２裂。花後は細長い蒴果を結び、熟すと裂けて小さな種子を散らします。

アンドログラフィスは根や葉が生薬「穿心蓮」として発熱、感冒、上気道感染、炎症性疾患、消化不良などに用いられます。主成分は抗炎症・解熱・免疫調節作用のあるアンドログラフォリドなどのジテルペンラクトン。蛇の咬み傷や虫の刺し傷に外用、肝機能の低下に内用されます。

King of Bitters’ roots grow from a thin taproot and lateral roots. The stems are dark green with four longitudinally fluted edges. The leaves are short-stalked, opposite, and lanceolate. The flowers are bilaterally symmetrical and lip-shaped. The upper lip is three-lobed, the lower lip two-lobed, there are two stamens, and the stigma of the pistil is slightly two-lobed. The roots and leaves of King of Bitters are used as an herbal medicine to treat fever, colds, upper respiratory tract infections, inflammatory diseases, and indigestion. The main components are diterpene lactones such as andrographolide, which have anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and immunomodulatory properties. They are applied externally to snake bites and insect stings, and internally to treat impaired liver function.
